Intelligence news

Cuba

NewsMax.Com reports in an article, that first appeared in the April 2002 American Legion Magazine, that China has replaced Russia as Fidel Castro's main partner for electronic espionage and other activities directed against the United States in the Western hemisphere.

The article mentions the well known facts that Russia paid annually USD 200 million for the Lourdes facility and that Mr Putin pulled the plug. It continues with the news that China has built a sophisticated new signals intelligence complex in Bejucal, Cuba, operating under the cover of Radio China. In addition to being used for espionage, these installations are reportedly part of a robust cyber-warfare capability Castro is developing.

Israel

Some interesting quotes from the Times:

ARIEL SHARON, the Israeli Prime Minister, faces a deep split with Mossad, the country's famed intelligence agency, over his strategy to defeat the Palestinian uprising. According to Israeli officials and intelligence sources, the split could result in the departure of Ephraim Halevy, the highly respected spy chief, who has on several occasions openly challenged the Israeli leader.

GROWING strains in Israel between Ariel Sharon, the Prime Minister, and the head of Mossad, his intelligence service, may have been triggered in part because spies no longer focus on the type of espionage that made them famous in the Cold War. Intelligence agencies over the past decade have had to restructure their operations with officers increasingly taking the roles of diplomats, analysts, policemen and more recently soldiers, instead of the "spooks" immortalized by writers such as John le Carre.
